HAp/β-TCP Biphasic Ceramics Obtained by the Pechini Method: An Antibacterial Approach

Calcium phosphates (CaPs) have broad applications in biomedicine, with the most used phases being hydroxyapatite (HAp) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) due to their similarity natural bone. There are several methods for obtaining CaPs. However, Pechini method attracts much attention its advantages: homogeneous molecular mixing, nanocrystalline particles, low processing temperature, generating nanometric simplicity. this is little discussed synthesis of This work aimed synthesize CaPs using method, analyzing antibacterial properties. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive (EDS). XRD confirmed biphasic ceramic HAp, no other phase as an impurity, where ratio between citric acid ethylene glycol (AC/EG) influenced percentage HAp β-TCP formed. Thermogravimetric showed a mass loss approximately 7%. SEM observed formation post-agglomerates irregular shapes. bacteriological test was satisfactory. above 25% inhibition growth Staphylococcus aureus Escherichia coli bacteria.
